Languages Cineforum -Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman"
All welcome to come along to this visual smorgasbord.
When: Monday 7 September
Where: Bldg 35 G45
Time: 5:30 - 7:30
As "The Movie Show"'s Margaret Pomeranz pointed out "Ang Lee is the most extraordinarily diverse filmmaker". English language audiences are familiar with his success in Hollywood with: "Lust, Caution", "Brokeback Mountain", "Hulk" "Crunching Tiger and Hidden Tiger" and "Sense and Sensibility".
However, Ang Lee's success can be traced back to his trilogy of father (Pushing hands 1992, The Wedding Banquet 1993 and 'Eat, Drink Man, Woman 1995")
It is believed that the trilogy represents his early success starting from Taiwan after his graduation as MFA and six years as a fulltime husband (unemployment) in USA.
Synopsis: "A master in the kitchen, Chu is at a loss when it comes to the ingredients of being a father. Every Sunday, he whips up a delicacy of dishes for his ungrateful daughters, who are so self-consumed that they don't see his attempt at showing them love gastronomically. So, as relationships sour and communications break down, Chu concocts a sure-fire recipe that will bring his family back together: He creates his own love affair to rival his daughters' affections!"
Reviews and comments: "Nothing ever delighted my eye and stomach on film like the magnificent preparation of Chinese food in Ang Lee's splendid Eat Drink Man Woman." (Stu Kobak)
"beautiful balance of elements- mellow, harmonious and poignantly funny" (The Washington Post).
"charming study of love, family and tradition" (Leonard Maltin)
"tickles both mind and body" (Movie Reviews UK)
