Language Centre’s community outreach

As part of the Language Centre’s community outreach, the Faculty of Arts and Italian community associations yesterday (4 August) presented two lectures involving Professor Alfredo Luzi from Italy’s Università di Macereta.

Both events were conducted in Italian and done in collaboration with the Federazione Delle Associazioni Dei Marchigiani Del NSW.

Professor Luzi, who is a professor of modern and contemporary Italian literature, focused his lectures on ‘the language of advertisement’.

He has published widely on topics as varied as the Italian poet Mario Luzi, the literature of migration, Italian Australian writer Gino Nibbi and Carmine Abate, a Calabrian writer of Albanian descent.

Professor Luzi has been a visiting professor at universities in France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Argentina, Canada and Australia.

Language Centre Director, Professor Kerry Dunne said the lectures were important as it highlighted the centre’s role in the Italian community in the Illawarra.

On a broader scale, Professor Dunne is exploring opportunities for liaising with community language groups and for introducing programs to prepare students for “today’s globalised economies”.
