BA Dean's Scholars
The Bachelor of Arts (Dean’s Scholars) caters for students who want to do Arts – and do well.
The degree program provides a facilitated path through the Bachelor of Arts, with ‘value-adding’ along the way. Whilst the Dean’s Scholars degree is not attached to a scholarship, students who wish to be considered for this program are encouraged to apply for the University’s Undergraduate, Residential, Foundation or Equity and Merit Scholarships.
The Dean’s Scholars Degree offers a challenge to high-achieving students. With the approval of Program Heads, students admitted to the Degree have the opportunity to attempt subjects not normally available to first year students, and to perform above the level normally expected at first year. They will be granted extended subject loads, enabling them, if they choose, to complete the degree in under the normal three years.
Students also benefit from:
- Designated study space for faculty’s dean’s scholars complete with computers, printer, telephone, lockers and kitchen;
- $500 text book allowance per year (Pro rata for part time students). (need executive approval);
- Opportunities to attend Faculty workshops and seminars;
- End of year Dean’s Scholars dinner with mentors and Faculty Executive (graduates are also invited to present on how being a dean’s scholar helped further their career opportunities).
- Extended Library privileges.
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts oversees the program and has meetings with the scholars each session. Each Dean’s Scholar has an academic mentor – a member of academic staff who nominates to advise the student on matters concerned with the degree. The Faculty is also developing an employment placement plan for students in the program which has resulted in several students being placed in part-time paid positions.
On successful completion of the first part of the course Dean’s Scholars will be guaranteed admission to Honours. The Honours year may be their fourth year, or it may begin in their third year of study.
The Degree is available to single-degree Arts students enrolling in the following Arts Faculty majors: Aboriginal Studies, Asia-Pacific Studies, Australian Studies, Employment Relations, English Studies, English Language Studies, European Studies, French, Gender Studies, History, Information Studies, Italian, Japanese, Media and Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Resource and Environmental Studies, Science Technology and Society (STS), Sociology and War and Society, Spanish.
A UAI of at least 93 (or equivalent for non-HSC admissions) is required for admission to the Degree. Students must maintain a Distinction (75%) average to remain in this degree program. If, at the end of the academic year, the average is below 75, students will be transferred into the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Admission to this course is on the basis of application and interview and there is a limited intake to the course. Interviews will be held in early December. Applications close 26th September. Applications from students who have applied for Early Entry into the BA will be granted an extension of two weeks.

Research in the Faculty of Arts is organised and administered through our research strength and research priority areas. The Faculty's University research strength is the ARC Key Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS), and our Faculty research strengths are:
Both CAPSTRANS and the Research Strengths regularly hold research seminars which are advertised via email. BA Honours students are encouraged to attend these seminars and to participate in research discussions.
