Gallipoli-bound students meet Turkish Vice-Consul
The Turkish Vice-Consul in Australia, The Hon Mr Ozgur Sahin, today (15 June) spoke to a group of students from UOW’s School of History and Politics before they depart on 21 June for a Gallipoli Study Tour.
It is part of the school’s intensive preparation classes ahead of the tour overseas. The Gallipoli tour leaders, Associate Professor John McQuilton, and PhD researcher, Jen Hawksley, organised the Vice-Consul's visit.
The School of History and Politics ran a Gallipoli Study Tour for the first time last year.
This year a total of 18 second and third year history students will be taking part in the 10-day tour to Istanbul and the Gallipoli Peninsula.
The students secured funding for the trip taking on jobs, fund raising and through the help of supportive families.
The Vice-Consul addressed the students on modern Turkey and the influence of the Gallipoli campaign on Turkish culture and nationalism.
