Welcome from the Dean
On behalf of the Faculty of Arts, I am pleased to welcome you and invite you to learn more about our exciting programs in humanities and social sciences. The University of Wollongong offers a supportive environment in which students can explore their interests and prepare for the global workplace of the 21st century. Our main undergraduate programs – the Bachelor or Arts, the Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies and the Bachelor of International Studies – combine the study of traditional disciplines with a focus on professional skills and graduate qualities. Our aim is to ensure that our graduates are not only highly employable, but possess the right mix of flexibility, intellectual curiosity and personal qualities that will be required of future citizens in an interconnected and ever changing world. All our programs provide opportunities to choose from a variety of subjects and disciplines, and our popular double degrees allow students to combine programs from Arts with the offerings of other faculties. Our Dean’s Scholars program offers high achievers additional support while challenging them to take on positions of leadership, within the University and in the wider community.
We want everyone in the Faculty of Arts, from first-year students to postgraduates, from our most junior staff to our professors, to benefit from an environment in which the extensive knowledge of the human world contained within the humanities and social sciences is treasured and cultivated. Our researchers, who have received national and international acclaim for their work in areas such as philosophy, history, literature and cultural studies, share their love of learning with students and have inspired many to pursue their studies beyond their first degree. We also make it our priority to incorporate an international outlook into everything we do – from our extensive foreign language program, our expertise in Asia Pacific politics and cultures, our focus on transnational literary traditions, world history and inter-cultural communication, to our encouragement and support of student exchange programs in collaboration with universities throughout the world.
I invite you to take some time to familiarise yourself with the UOW Faculty of Arts and to consider joining us as we work together to ensure that you receive the very best an Arts education can provide.
Professor Wenche Ommundsen
