I joined the centre at the beginning of 2005 when I arrived back at the University of Wollongong after having studied on exchange at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. When I returned back to Wollongong I was eager to use my international experience and the Centre appealed to me because of its cross-cultural focus between Canada and Australia. As I am currently in my fourth year of studying a combined degree in Arts and Law (BA/LLB) here at the University of Wollongong I felt right at home being involved with a cross-disciplinary research centre.
During my time at the Centre I participated in a number of projects the most memorable of which was definitely my first project. This was the co-organising of the 6 th Annual Nortel Lecture given by Dr David Suzuki. Working on the Suzuki project gave me the chance to liase with media, university and community members as well as developing my marketing and presentation skills. My second major project was working on a survey for the Centre. This was a mammoth task that involved research, printing, mail out and data collection to name just a few of the diverse jobs involved.
I was also able to work on a variety of the Centre's many publications including those related to the Federation Dialogue and Nortel Lecture Series. I was also able to write articles on other University events that the Centre was involved in during the year with my favourite one of these events being the Legal Intersections seminar given by Professor Jocelyn Downie.
Through participating in All Canada Day 2005 I had the privilege to work with the latest intern to the Centre, Courtney Price. I also met representatives from the Canadian High Commission in Canberra, including interns from Canada currently working at the High Commission.
My experience with the Centre has been enriching both personally and academically and I would highly recommend getting involved with the work of the Centre to anyone. |
