About the Artists

Latesha Adams is 17 years old and started circus in 2000. She has had many experiences with the circus program at Maari Ma Health in Broken Hill. She would like eventually to be a trainer and a role model for the Indigenous Youth in her community.

Aerialize: Sydney Aerial Theatre is Sydney's leading aerial and circus arts training centre and performance company. It was founded in 1999 by Shelalagh McGovern and Aimee Thomas to promote circus and aerial skills in the community.

Alicia Battestini is Artistic Director of Circus Monoxide. She has been with the company since 1998 in a variety of key roles. She trained as a performer/director and writer at New York University and Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

Debra Iris Batton is the Artistic Director of Legs on the Wall. She has directed for Festival Melbourne 2006 and produced work for Australian Theatre for Young People, Legs On the Wall, Storm In A Tea Cup Dance Theatre and Magpie Theatre in Adelaide.

Ann Burbrook’s career started as a classical ballet dancer before she moved into acting. She has worked extensively in the performing arts for the last 21 years as a performer, director and theatre administrator.

Antonella Casella’s involvement in contemporary circus includes London’s Circus Space, Circus UK, Snapdragon Circus, Circus OZ and Vulcana Women’s Circus.

Abi Collins co-founded “Prometheus”, a fire performance troupe and “Captive Theatre” a physical comedy ensemble. She is the co-founder of Sticky Planet and is a two-time recipient of the Campus Activities Victoria Award for “Best Street Performer”.

Pam Creed is Director of the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA).

Helene Embling studied Circus and Physical Theatre in Paris and performed as an aerialist in France, Germany, Poland, and Denmark. She currently teaches aerial training at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA).

Drew Fairley has become one of Australia’s leading MCs. He has performed with Theatre Kantanka, REM Theatre Co., The Edinburgh Puppet Company and was the Artistic Director of THROTTLE.

Jeremy Gaden is Associate Producer at NICA, with a focus on the activities of Circa NICA, a trading arm of NICA that deals with entrepreneurial activities as well as producing student shows. His background is in arts festivals and venue management.

Shep Huntley founded the Happy Sideshow in 1999. They have performed at the Sydney Opera House, toured Australia-wide with the infamous stunt bike motorcycle riders “The Crusty Demons” and have done two tours with Machine Gun Fellatio.

Imogen Kelly is a Sydney-based performance artist and director. She has a BFA from The College of Fine Arts (NSW, 1995), a diploma in Circus Arts at ZACA Academy, and graduated from NIDA Directors in 2002. She is the co-founder of the all-women’s performance troupe Gurlesque.

Donna Kennedy is Manager Youth Excellence Arts and Health Program at Maari Ma Health in Broken Hill. Donna has worked as an Aboriginal Education Assistant in high schools for the last 13 years. She has been manager of this program for a year.

Tiger Lily has toured and performed since 1999 with The Happy Sideshow. She also performs with the “La La Parlour” and with “Monsteria”, a performance duo that engages acrobatic, dance and theatrical elements.

Penny Lowther has been a resident in Wollongong for the past fourteen years. Having completed a BA in Psychology, a BCA in Sculpture & Creative Arts and a Masters in Creativity Psychotherapy, Penny has worked as an Expressive Arts Therapist, a Creative Arts workshop facilitator, a Visual Artist, a Performance Artist, a Puppeteer, with her company, ‘The Magic Wardrobe Puppet Company’ and since 2001 as the Founder/Director/ Performer in Circus WOW, Wollongong’s very own Women’s Circus. Penny works both as a workshop facilitator - teaching other participants visual arts, drama, puppetry and Expressive Arts techniques; and as a Performance Artist using circus, physical theatre, visual arts and puppetry.

Shelalagh McGovern is Founder,  Director and Head Trainer of Aerialize—Sydney, Aerial Theatre. She has a BA in Theatre and Languages from the University of NSW with a background in Theatre and Gymnastics. She competed in state gymnastic championships, representing the Eastern Suburbs School of Gymnastics, trained in swinging trapeze with Tanya Lester, Scott Greyland, Sebastian and Rita and has been an aerialist for over 10 years. She has a Graduate diploma in Arts Administration from UTS.

Louise Moriarty is Artistic Director of the circus program at Maari Ma Health in Broken Hill in 2000. She works with gifted, talented and marginalised youth.

Violet Morrison graduated from CircoArts, New Zealand in 2000 and has worked for companies around the world. She specialises in aerial performance. She is currently a Board member and core performer with Circus Monoxide.

Hall Murray is a founding member and Director of Circus Monoxide.

Kymberlyn Olsen aka Kim Kaos has worked in circus and street performance for the past 24 years. She has taught and worked with the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, The Women’s Circus, Swinburne University, Circus Oz, and many others. Kim founded and edited, Ozjuggle, Australia's first journal on contemporary circus and street performance, for 8 years.

Kirsty Seymour began her training in classical ballet then went on to study theatre and writing at Griffith University. She began her circus training with Rodleigh Stevens in 2001 focusing on aerials and is currently Head Trainer at Flipside Youth Circus, Brisbane.

Paul Woodhead is the Circus Arts Consultant for the Western NSW Region of the NSW Department of Education. He was Director of Circus West at Dubbo West Public School for 15 years. He was elected to the national committee of ACAPTA in 2006.
