‘Pre-Departure Seminar' for Australian Exchange Students By Veronica Lasanowski
On 9 May 2005 the Canadian Consulate General in Sydney hosted a Pre-Departure Seminar during which Australian exchange students travelling to Canada for the 2005-06 Academic year were given practical information on how to make the best of their time while overseas.
A welcome address, highlighting the many similarities between Australia and Canada, was followed by briefings from Consulate officials, academics and former exchange students on immigration procedures, work provisions, university administrative processes and travel opportunities. Seminar organizer, Mr. Tony McKittrick from the Canadian High Commission, Canberra, was ably assisted by Associate Professor Gerry Turcotte, Director of the Centre for Canadian-Australian Studies at the University of Wollongong, Amber Bentley, Study Exchange Advisor at the University of Wollongong, Exchange Program Coordinator, Mandy Baric from the University of Western Sydney and STA Travel representative, Richard Fowler.
Departing students were presented with copies of the recently published Pre-Departure Guide for Australian Students. Following the seminar, a light luncheon gave students the opportunity to interact with guest speakers and to meet fellow Canada-bound students. |
