Nortel Networks
Canadian Studies Address
2003 - The 4th Nortel Networks' Canadian Studies Lecture
by Peter Bregg
World-famous Canadian photographer Peter Bregg provided a glance into his 35-year-long career behind the lens during the Fourth Annual Nortel Networks Canadian Studies Address at the University of Wollongong on June 27, 2003.
A slide presentation and discussion chronicled the 60 countries that Mr Bregg has visited during his career, spanning from his time with The Canadian Press in Ottawa, to his work with Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, to his appointment with the Associated Press in Boston, London, New York and Washington.
For the past 14 years, Mr Bregg has been Chief Photographer at Maclean's, Canada's most important weekly news magazine.
Mr Bregg's career has seen him travel the globe to cover world events including seven Olympic Games, the Iran hostage crisis in 1979-80 and the imposition of Marshal law on the Solidarity movement in Poland in 1981. He was also in New York to cover the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre.
Mr Bregg has won several prestigious awards and has also been arrested or detained on some occasions in the course of his long career, including at the Quebec independence movement protests in 1969.
Many of his photos from throughout the Trudeau era were featured in the exhibition "Trudeau: 1968-1984", which were fittingly on display at Old Parliament House in Canberra.
A VIP reception for Mr Bregg was hosted at the University by Mr James Langridge, Vice-Principal (International) prior to the keynote address, which was introduced by Illawarra Mercury Editor, Mr Mitchell Murphy. The Centre for Canadian-Australian Studies was also pleased to host Mrs Angela Evans, from Nortel Networks, whose company generously supports and enables the Centre to continue to bring the Nortel Networks Canadian Studies Address and other events to the University and to the Wollongong community.
