The 4th Conference
University of Wollongong
12-14 April, 2012

Theme: “Sustenance”

What does the Pacific draw sustenance from:

  • economically
  • physically
  • socially
  • culturally
  • historically
  • politically
  • spiritually
  •  intellectually?

What is sustainable in each of these:

  • in the Pacific Islands
  • in Australia
  • in Pacific Studies?

Papers and Panels on any of these or other related themes are welcome.

The organisers invite proposals for papers addressing these questions. Abstracts of up to 250 words to Frances Steel fsteel@uow.edu.au

The deadline is now extended to 31 January.

 Venue

The University of Wollongong is at the foot of Mount Keira and close to some very lovely beaches at the Western edge of the Pacific. Wollongong’s reputation as an industrial town lives on in a few active coal mines and a major steelworks, but it is also the hub for tourist access to rural Illawarra and the Southern Highlands.

The Conference will be held in the McKinnon Building (building 67). See Campus map

Getting there

By car: from the south, either by the Macquarie Pass, the Picton Road or Highway One. From the north, either by the coastal route through Stanwell Park or down the F6.

For the Picton Road/F6 driver DO NOT head straight towards the beach after the metal sculpture: follow the highway around to the right (mind the speed camera!) and take the next exit, then right and right to the University.

Parking: go to the top roundabout Western entrance and either go right to the undercover carpark (more expensive but with a card and pay machine that takes notes and credit cards) or on and left to the Western carpark (cheaper ticket machines but they only take coins).

By Train: get off at Wollongong and take a taxi or at North Wollongong. For the latter you may coincide with a shuttle bus to campus: if not, it’s a 20 minute stroll towards the mountain with some zig zag to get over the freeways.

From the airport: take the train to Wolli Creek or Central and change trains to the Southern/Illawarra line (trains to Wollongong, Port Kembla, Kiama, Bomaderry). You can also book a shuttle bus/limousine with Leisure coast . Cost up to $110 depending on numbers

Visit the Getting to UOW website to find out more about transport and shuttle bus services.
