UOW Loftus Sydney Business School (SBS) Alumni Chapter Launch

On Thursday, July 9 the first event for the Loftus SBS Alumni Chapter was held at the Tradies Hotel in Gymea.  It was an outstanding success on all fronts with a fantastic response from previous and current Loftus Campus students and a few UOW Commerce Alumni.

Guest speakers for the night were: Craig James, Chief Equities Economist at CommSec (Commonwealth Securities) and Professor John Glynn who is the Dean of the Graduate School of Business and also the Sydney Business School.

Craig James gave an outstanding presentation on the Global Financial Crisis, the way it affects our economy, our businesses and our private finance. Craig has an exceptional ability to deliver an in depth overview in a very entertaining fashion. It is evident that Craig has a very positive attitude towards the current economic situation, and highlighted areas of optimism although there are certainly some challenges ahead. However the question remains: when will we see a recovery of the global economy. Some key areas Craig discussed were the job market, interest rates and the Aussie dollar.

Our own Professor John Glynn discussed the current global macro-economics and the reasons and history behind the Global Financial Crisis from an academic point of view, emphasising the “lack off’ Corporate Governance. Drawing on his expertise both in the classroom and as an internationally recognised researcher, Professor John Glynn also has wide international experience in management development programs.  He is an advisor to a number of companies, government agencies and departments including the National Audit Office (UK), The Australian Audit Office, the NSW Parliament's Public Accounts Committee and the OECD.

There were plenty of questions for the guest speakers, adding to a very interactive night.

Following on from our inaugural meeting, there was an opportunity to partake in refreshments, to network with the people present plus an opportunity to talk to our guest speakers. The UOW Graduate School of Business/Sydney Business Rugby Jumpers were a great success and will again be available at our next event.

The feedback from the group told us it was a great evening and the Loftus Committee sincerely appreciates the time and input of our guest speakers.  We are certainly looking forward to our next Event!
