Bandaged Bear Benefit Night raises $300,000
A 12-year-old with severe cerebral palsy, Mecenzi Howard, will be one of the main beneficiaries of the Bandage Bear Benefit Night held at West Illawarra Leagues in September. Another beneficiary will be Southern Children’s Care of which UOW is the driving force. It aims to provide world-class medical care for seriously ill children in the Illawarra so they and their families do not have to travel to Sydney for treatment. Full story.

UOW academic invited to World Innovation Summit for Education
Associate Professor Ian Brown from UOW’s Faculty of Education has been invited to attend the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) being held from 16-18 November in Doha, Qatar. Read more

Government announces seven UOW academics as Future Fellows
The Federal Government has announced the outcomes of a new scheme, ARC (Australian Research Council) Future Fellowships to promote research in areas of critical national importance. The aim is to give outstanding researchers incentives to conduct their research in Australia so that the country can attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers. The Minister for Innovation, Industry Science and Research Senator Kim Carr said at present many highly qualified mid-career researchers choose to work overseas to further their careers due to lack of opportunities in Australia. UOW research team wins top mental health award with a flourish
The Flourish Program developed by researchers at the University of Wollongong won a Gold Award in The Mental Health Services Conference 2009 Achievement Awards. Read more. 

University Council Elections 2009
Nominations for the 2009 University Council elections have closed. Voting will take place October 6 to October 20 2009 for the following positions on the University Council:

  • 1 Postgraduate Student member
  • 1 Undergraduate Student member
  • 1 Graduate Member

LIVING AT UOW NEWS - What’s happening in the residences?

International House Global Wellbeing Residential Scholarships
Fundraising for the  Global Wellbeing Residential Scholarships commences this month with the aim of reaching the $5000 target by the end of the year.  In the lead up to the 30 years of International House in 2010, International House plans to raise $5,000 which will enable International House to offer 5 x $1,000 residential scholarships to residents who have demonstrated intercultural leadership. The University of Wollongong is digitising selected sections of its archival material. Our aim is to make available the records preserved in UOW’s Archives for the purpose of research, teaching and learning. The digitised back issues of the Alumni magazine are now available online at http://www.library.uow.edu.au/uowlibraries/digitalarchive/alumnimagazine/index.html.

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Executive MBA 2010
Sydney Business School is now calling for applications for the 2010 cohort of its Executive MBA (EMBA) program. The SBS EMBA is run out of its Liverpool Street, Sydney, campus and has been designed for mid to upper level managers who are seeking to broaden their business knowledge base. The program focuses on the business strategy and managerial skills required for senior leadership and is run over a series of 3 day weekends (one per subject). Assessment is via a portfolio of work related management reports.

Alumni Speed Networking event in the ACT
The UOW Alumni Network will be holding a speed networking event for alumni living and/or working in the ACT on the 4th of November. Speed Networking provides a great opportunity for you to meet fellow alumni across a variety of industries and organisations. It not only provides a forum for you to network for the benefit of your professional career, but also an opportunity to reminisce about life at UOW. The UOW Alumni Network will be hosting a social networking Christmas Drinks event for alumni living and/or working in Sydney on the 2nd of December. Invitations will be emailed out in early November and details will be on the Alumni Website.

The Faculty of Creative Arts 2009 Art and Design ‘GradShow’

Learning for Life program - Call for Mentors
In partnership with UOW, the Smith Family's Learning for Life program provides mentoring opportunities so that all young people make a smooth transition from school to work or further education.

Mentoring can be wonderfully rewarding and a great opportunity to utilise your experience and skills in giving a ‘hand up’ to a young person. We are calling on mentors to help continue to support our students currently on our Learning for Life program. GIVING TO UOW

So far this year UOW alumni have donated over $50,000 to help the fight against cancer and provide scholarships to students in need through the UOW Annual Appeal.
