Nominate a Commerce Graduate today!
This year marks the 16th presentation of the Commerce & Business Alumni Award.
The Award is given annually to a graduate who demonstrates leadership, personal, professional or academic success, innovation and creativity and community spirit. Do you know of a University of Wollongong Commerce graduate who matches this profile? Please help to honour their achievements by nominating them for this Award. The recipient’s name will be inscribed on the Alumni Honour Board in the Commerce Building. The recipient will also be given the honour of awarding a $500 prize in their name to a selected Commerce student in 2010. The recipient will be invited back in 2010 to present the prize to the successful student.

Welcome to Wollongong Festival - Celebrating International Students
A civic reception and festival to welcome international students to Wollongong will take place on Friday the 27th of February 2009. Supported by Wollongong City Council and the University of Wollongong, the Civic Reception, traditional Welcome to Country and indigenous performances will be held at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) at 11:00am especially for international students, followed by a festival in the Civic Plaza next to IPAC from 12noon to 2:00pm. The festival will feature live music, markets, giveaways and interactive activities. The festival is free to all who would like to come along and is a great way to meet and welcome international students to our City. The festival has been organised by the W2W (Welcome to Wollongong) working group and supported by the University of Wollongong, TAFE, and local organisations. Read more at http://w2w.uow.edu.au/

Postcards from the Globe: I-House opens international donor wall
International House opened its donor recognition wall, Postcards from the Globe on Friday 16 January, which heralds the start of a six month fundraising campaign. The special event was opened by UOW Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Rob Castle and attended by UOW staff. International House directors from around the world were also there, having attended the International Houses Worldwide Conference held in Sydney and Wollongong. Full story.

Generous donation creates new student scholarship
An act of generosity by UOW Alumni Education Chapter Patron and the first Dean of Students Ms Hazel Holmwood, means that a new student scholarship has been established in the Faculty of Education.
Ms Holmwood’s gift has established a scholarship to recognise Primary Teaching students at UOW who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in practice and leadership through quality teaching. Read more about Ms Holmwood.
UOW alumnus Amanda Cole publishes her debut novel, I hate Cinderella
I hate Cinderella is the debut novel of award-winning photographer and UOW alumnus Amanda Cole. Based on a dream she had on a plane, it’s an inspirational fairytale-style story for grown ups. With plenty of empathy and imagination, Amanda says that I hate Cinderella is for anyone who has ever had a broken heart, cried for days and been unable to eat, sleep or concentrate.
I hate Cinderella was released in December 2008 with a very successful launch at the Black & Blue Gallery in Surry Hills with Bianca Dye (from NOVA) MCing the event. For more information visit http://www.ihatecinderella.com/
Alumni Events in 2009 – Illawarra, Sydney, Canberra
The UOW Alumni Office will be hosting alumni events in Sydney, the Illawarra and Canberra in 2009. The Sydney event will be held in May, the Illawarra event in August and the Canberra event in November. Your input is invaluable to us so please complete the Alumni Event Survey so that we can make sure our events meet the needs of our alumni. Commerce Chapter Alumni Breakfast success
Wollongong residents should be proud of the region's beautiful surrounds, toursim opportunities and first class industry and education. That was the message of Novotel Northbeach General Manager Walter Immoos when he spoke at an alumni breakfast at the Innovation Campus.
More than 60 alumni and business people shared ideas with Mr Immoos at the Commerce Business Alumni Network breakfast about the future direction of the local region as part of a seminar series, Opportunity Knocks Illawarra. Full Alumni Breakfast story
Teachers College Reunion
Education graduates from the 1967-68 Teachers College cohort will be meeting at 4:00pm in the McKinnon Foyer on Saturday 31st January 2009 for a 40 year reunion tour and lunch. We are looking for lost alumni from that time to join us. CONSIDERING A CAREER AS A TEACHER? APPLY NOW FOR 2009!
The UOW Graduate Diploma in Education provides a teaching qualification that is recognised by the NSW Institute of Teachers, the NSW Department of Education and Training, the Catholic Education Office, the Association of Independent Schools, and employing authorities in other states. It is also accepted internationally.
There are places available in some Secondary teaching methods at the Wollongong campus and applications are invited for the Primary Education method at our Shoalhaven campus, Batemans Bay and Bega Education Centres. Applications close on December 31st, 2008.

Occupational Hygiene Practice
The Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences has recently introduced an exciting new area of study in the field of Occupational Hygiene Practice (OHP). From 2009, the Faculty will be offering a Master of Science (OHP) and a Graduate Certificate in OHP.
The University of Wollongong has worked with international stakeholders to develop quality training materials that are accepted throughout the world. All lecturers are highly experienced with many currently practising in the field. For further information about these programs click here.
The Graduate School of Business and the Executive MBA
You may want to give yourself an edge with a qualification from our Graduate School of Business (GSB). From 2009 the GSB will be offering an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), a 21 month, part-time program based primarily on weekend delivery. The EMBA has a strong focus on strategy, leadership and the skills that executives need to operate in a challenging and changing global economy.
The GSB also launched two new Masters degrees in 2008 in the areas of Retail Management and Business Coaching. Both are the first of their kind in Australia! In addition to these new degrees, the GSB offers generalised management programs such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and specialist Masters in the areas of International Business, Project Management, and Logistics. Career Ahead – Alumni interviewers needed!
The Alumni Office will be holding a fun and interactive mock interview program on Wednesday 1st of April, called Career Ahead – Speed Interviewing! Current students will be invited to participate in the program in which they will gain invaluable interview skills in a speed interviewing environment. Alumni will act as interviewers in the program. If you are interested in being one of our interviewers and are available all day on the 1st of April, please email kelly@uow.edu.au for further information.

Public Lecture: South Coast Marine Parks: Benefits, Biodiversity and Baited underwater videos
The first session of the Uni in the Brewery series for 2009 will be held on Wednesday 11 March at 5.30pm. Dr Pia Winberg, Director of the Shoalhaven Marine and Freshwater Centre and A/Prof. Andy Davis from the School of Biological Sciences at UOW will present. Full Uni in the Brewery event information.
Public lecture - Indigo Foundation, Postive Tales from Afghanistan
The UOW Cares Workplace Giving Committee welcomes the Indigo Foundation to UOW. The Foundation is proud to present Salman Jan to talk about his experience travelling back to Afghanistan last year to assess the progress of a project set up to improve education and life opportunities for boys and girls in Borjegai, Afghanistan. The Indigo Foundation is one of eight external charities UOW staff are supporting through the workplace giving program known as UOW Cares. Alumni are warmly invited to attend this presentation. Free lunch provided.

Alumni Bookshop
The Alumni Bookshop reopened for 2009 on Tuesday 3 February. The Alumni Bookshop is run by a hard working group of volunteers from the Campus Chapter of the UOW Alumni Network. The bookshop sells a diverse range of quality second-hand books; fiction, non-fiction and textbooks, at very reasonable prices. All book sales support UOW scholarships and prizes. The bookshop is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30am – 2:30pm and on Saturdays from 1pm – 5pm and is located at Cottage 119, Northfields Avenue, Gwynneville. Phone 4221 5977
