PhD student wins inaugural BioAssayLINK award
PhD researcher from UOW’s School of Health Sciences and Smart Foods Centre, Cassandra Sparkes, recently won the inaugural BioAssayLINK award at the recent Australian Atherosclerosis Society conference. Read more about Cassandra Sparkes.

Institute promises to set new benchmark for community-based medical research
The Minister for the Illawarra, Mr David Campbell, today officially turned the first sod of soil for the $30 million Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute. The University is establishing the Institute, to be operational by 2010, in a joint initiative with the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service. Read more about the Institute. 

Visit by The Hon Justice Michael Kirby
The Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG visited the University of Wollongong earlier this year and presented a public lecture on ‘The High Court of Australia – The Most Common Questions’. Ahead of his retirement from the High Court of Australia in early 2009, after 13 years of service, Justice Kirby addressed a diverse range of frequently asked questions about the High Court of Australia.

Justice Kirby also spoke of the high esteem in which he holds the UOW Faculty of Law, making special mention of two UOW graduates who served as his Associate: Elisa Arcioni (BA/LLB, 2001), currently a Lecturer, UOW Faculty of Law) and James Goudkamp (BSc/LLB 2003), currently a Lecturer in Law at St Hilda's College, Oxford and a doctoral candidate at Magdalen College, Oxford, and Visiting Fellow, UOW Faculty of Law).

The International House formal this year marked the beginning of fundraising for International House and for the first time alumni have come back to attend the formal and sponsor awards. ACT Alumni Cocktail Reception
UOW Alumni Network held their inagural alumni cocktail reception in the ACT on the 19th of November. More than 50 UOW alumni attended the event which was a great success. Guest speaker Associate Professor Adam Dolnik spoke about his area of research into terrorism and alumni had the opportunity to mingle with their fellow graduates. Full story on ACT event.

Commerce Chapter Alumni Breakfast success
Wollongong residents should be proud of the region's beautiful surrounds, toursim opportunities and first class industry and education. That was the message of Novotel Northbeach General Manager Walter Immoos when he spoke at an alumni breakfast at the Innovation Campus.

More than 60 alumni and business people shared ideas with Mr Immoos at the Commerce Business Alumni Network breakfast about the future direction of the local region as part of a seminar series, Opportunity Knocks Illawarra. Full Alumni Breakfast story

Teachers College Reunion
Education graduates from the 1967-68 Teachers College cohort will be meeting at 4:00pm in the McKinnon Foyer on Saturday 31st January 2009 for a 40 year reunion tour and lunch. POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

CONSIDERING A CAREER AS A TEACHER? APPLY NOW FOR 2009!
The UOW Graduate Diploma in Education provides a teaching qualification that is recognised by the NSW Institute of Teachers, the NSW Department of Education and Training, the Catholic Education Office, the Association of Independent Schools, and employing authorities in other states. It is also accepted internationally.

There are places available in some Secondary teaching methods at the Wollongong campus and applications are invited for the Primary Education method at our Shoalhaven campus, Batemans Bay and Bega Education Centres. Applications close on December 31st, 2008.

Occupational Hygiene Practice
The Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences has recently introduced an exciting new area of study in the field of Occupational Hygiene Practice (OHP). From 2009, the Faculty will be offering a Master of Science (OHP) and a Graduate Certificate in OHP.

The University of Wollongong has worked with international stakeholders to develop quality training materials that are accepted throughout the world. All lecturers are highly experienced with many currently practising in the field. For further information about these programs click here.

The Graduate School of Business and the Executive MBA
You may want to give yourself an edge with a qualification from our Graduate School of Business (GSB). From 2009 the GSB will be offering an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), a 21 month, part-time program based primarily on weekend delivery. The EMBA has a strong focus on strategy, leadership and the skills that executives need to operate in a challenging and changing global economy.

The GSB also launched two new Masters degrees in 2008 in the areas of Retail Management and Business Coaching. Both are the first of their kind in Australia! In addition to these new degrees, the GSB offers generalised management programs such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and specialist Masters in the areas of International Business, Project Management, and Logistics. Calling for Volunteers
The Alumni Bookshop is seeking volunteers to work once a month for 4 hours on a Wednesday or Thursday. The Bookshop is run by volunteers and all proceeds from sales contribute to scholarships and prizes for students at the University of Wollongong. You can make education possible for UOW students. So far in 2008 alumni, staff and other friends of UOW have donated $9730 to support the Learning and Development Fund.
