This year marks the 15th presentation of the Commerce & Business Alumni Award. The Award is given annually to a graduate who demonstrates leadership, personal, professional or academic success, innovation and creativity and community spirit. Do you know of a University of Wollongong Commerce graduate who matches this profile? Please help to honour their achievements by nominating them for this Award. The recipient’s name will be inscribed on the Alumni Honour Board in the Commerce Building. The recipient will also be given the honour of awarding a $500 prize in their name to a selected Commerce student in 2009. The recipient will be invited back in 2009 to present the prize to the successful student. Nominations close on Friday 7 March 2008. Excellence in Research Supervision
The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Supervision recognises on-going commitment and dedication to successful research student supervision. Research supervisors are nominated by present and past Higher Degree Research Students for this award. The winner will receive a plaque and a cash prize of $4,000 and will be formally acknowledged at the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Awards ceremony. V-C gains Order of Australia (AO) accolade
University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, has been made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2008 Australia Day Honours for his service to tertiary education. Read full story
New Dean takes up post at Graduate School of Medicine
The new Dean of the University of Wollongong’s Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) officially started in her new role in mid January. Professor Elizabeth Farmer is the first female general practitioner to become the Dean of a medical school in Australia. Read full story
Celebrating a bigger, brighter, better Library for UOW
The University community and distinguished guests joined in celebrating the official opening of the extension to the Library on Thursday 7 February 2008. The extension has transformed the Library from bunker to beauty. We look forward to sharing the vastly improved facilities of the new Library with our Alumni. Civic Reception & Mini Festival to Welcome International Students
A civic reception and festival to welcome international students to Wollongong will take place on Friday the 29th of February 2008. Supported by Wollongong City Council and the University of Wollongong, the Civic Reception will be held on the amphitheatre stage in Lower Crown Street Mall Wollongong at 11.30am and includes an official welcome from Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Alex Darling AM together with community leaders of the City of Wollongong. This will be followed by a festival until 3pm, featuring entertainment and performers including Australian Idol’s Tarisai Vushe. There will also be plenty of information stalls, craft and food markets at the festival. The festival is free to all who would like to come along and has been funded by IMB Community Foundation grant and organised by the W2W (Welcome to Wollongong) working group. Positions Vacant, the 2007 Graduation Show in Visual Arts and Graphic Design featured works from over 70 students who 'vacated the premises' to enter the creative world beyond. The exhibition included a mix of painting, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, graphic design, photography, new media, motion graphics, animation, web design, advertising, magazine publication, t-shirts, CD-cover art and installation art. Developing Resources for Community Language Schools in the Illawarra: Faculty of Education alumni are invited to attend the launch of this collaborative community project to be held 5:15pm on Wednesday 13 February 2008 at Wollongong City Gallery. This project involved Faculty of Education final year students working with community language school teachers and students to develop a range of resources for the schools. Public Lecture: Pink or Paris? Girls, giftedness and popular culture
The first Uni in The Brewery series for 2008 will be held on Wednesday 19 March at 5.30pm. Associate Professor Wilma Vialle from the Faculty of Education will discuss the images of giftedness portrayed in texts such as the Harry Potter series, The Simpsons and Daria, and how these may impact on gifted students. Alumni Bookshop
The Alumni Bookshop reopened for 2008 on Tuesday 5 February. The Alumni Bookshop is run by a hard working group of volunteers from the Campus Chapter of the UOW Alumni Network. The bookshop sells a diverse range of quality second-hand books; fiction, non-fiction and textbooks, at very reasonable prices. All book sales support UOW scholarships and prizes. The bookshop is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30am – 2:30pm and on Saturdays from 1pm – 5pm and is located at Cottage 119, Northfields Avenue, Gwynneville. Phone 4221 5977
