Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service – Nominations Now Open
The Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service have been established in 2007 to recognise achievement in community service and to highlight the personal contributions that UOW alumni and others make to the advancement of their society. Two distinguished awards are offered each year; one for UOW alumni and the other for community members (or community groups). Each award carries a prize of $2000. Andersen Adds Alumni Leadership to UOW Roles
Prominent Illawarra pathologist and business leader Dr Stephen Andersen has taken over as chairman of UOW’s Alumni Development Group (ADG). The ADG’s role is to provide strategic advice and support to Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerard Sutton on current and new alumni programs and initiatives. Full story

Join the Commerce & Business Alumni Network on Wednesday 9 May to launch the 2007 Breakfast Seminar Series Opportunity Knocks – Illawarra. The seminar features successful businessman Bob Doyle, Manager of the Office of Economic Development for Wollongong City Council.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of $6.6million Indoor Sports Facility
Strong interaction between UOW and the region’s community sporting bodies was the linchpin in the Federal Government’s decision to fund a 3,000 seat multi-purpose indoor sports facility. UOW students, staff and the Wollongong community will be the main beneficiaries of the facility which is expected to be ready in early 2008. Read full story
UOW Composer Chosen Alongside Bach to Showcase Work in London
Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts, Professor Andrew Schultz, travelled to London for the premiere of one of his classical compositions at Wigmore Hall. Professor Schultz was one of six composers chosen to write new work for the 60th birthday celebrations of David Takeno, Head of Strings at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Read more
UOW Makes Strong Contribution to Innovation Festival
The University will hold seven events this year as part of the Australian Innovation Festival which takes place between 26 April and 27 May 2007. They include two public lectures that highlight the latest research in business performance and IT, and a public forum entitled Energy Options for 2020 at the Science Centre. A highlight of the program will be Innovation Idol – a competition for UOW research students which will test their “capacity to develop an innovative solution to a hypothetical problem in Australia, and their ability to ‘pitch’ their innovative idea”. Sustainable Energy Lecture: Professor David Officer
Sustainable economic growth requires cheap renewable, environmentally acceptable energy resources. In this talk, Professor Officer will discuss the potential of artificial photosynthesis-based solar cell technologies and highlight the advances that have been made in this area here at UOW and overseas. The lecture will be held on 19 April 2007 at 5.30pm. Full event details
Exhibition: Paintings, Drawings, Fabric by Georgina Beier
A new exhibition at UOW will feature works by prominent international artist Georgina Beier. Three different phases of her work will be on display, including recent paintings of West African (Yoruba) ancestral masquerades, black and white drawings, and a screening of a Yoruba ‘Alarinjo’ group performance. Opening on Thursday 19 April at 12.30pm, the exhibition runs until 10 May. Full exhibition details

Have Your Say on Legal Skills Education
To improve undergraduate legal education at UOW, the Faculty of Law is holding a focus group meeting on Wednesday 2 May at 5.30pm. You are invited to attend the meeting to share your opinions about your law degree. All feedback received will be used to enhance the quality of legal education at UOW.
