Established in 1967, Macquarie University has grown from a small, innovative institution to a multi-faceted university situated in the heart of one of Australia's leading high-technology parks. The 125 hectare campus is situated 18 kilometres northwest of Sydney's central business district and enjoys a magnificent natural bushland setting.

Macquarie is widely regarded as an innovator in Australian higher education. Its interdisciplinary approach produces graduates with wide expertise and career opportunities. Macquarie introduced external degrees in law and science in Australia, and now its students are able to use the Internet to access entire courses.

Macquarie's academic pursuits have always been based on a very close relationship between teaching and research. Macquarie has developed and enhanced a high-performance research culture renowned for research distinction in key areas of Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Commerce, the Humanities (including the respected Macquarie Dictionary Centre) plus Science and Technology.

Nine national research centres, ranging from biochemistry, climate and mineral exploration to study of marsupials, HIV education and English language teaching, are located at the University.

Enhancing Macquarie's high-quality research base is Macquarie University's Research Park, a joint venture with the construction company Baulderstone and Hornibrook. The Research Park provides opportunities for Macquarie's postgraduate students to participate in research projects with the tenants including Siemens, Goodman Fielder, Becton Dickinson and the University's research company, Macquarie Research.
