Vice-Chancellor (Operations)
Professor John Patterson
Professor John Patterson was Dean of the Faculty of Education
from 1993- 1999, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural
Science in 2000 - 2001 and most recently Acting Dean of the
Faculty of Arts. He was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Operations), University of Wollongong (UOW) in May 2001. He is also currently acting as the Dean of Commerce.
His portfolio focuses on strategic directions, human resource
planning and financial allocation in the academic sector of
the University. He has prime responsibility for advising,
monitoring and reviewing faculty operations.
As a member of the Executive he is pivotal to the development
of the University's strategic plan and the coordination of
faculty development plans. He oversees the planning for student
intake quotas and has operational responsibility for space
allocation; Employment and Equal Opportunity initiatives and
functioning; academic industrial relations; and Occupational
Health and Safety.
Professor Patterson holds two Master's degrees and a doctorate
and as a professor in Education is a highly respected scholar.
He has published through books, journals and conference papers
and is a frequent presenter at state, national and international
conferences. He has addressed a range of discipline specific
and general educational topics including physical and health
education, policy development in education and most recently
information technology and education
Having been a member of the Australian Council of Deans of
Education; an appointed member of the NSW Advisory Council
on the Quality of Teaching; and an executive member of the
NSW Teacher Education Council, he has a record of involvement
in the state and national policy arena where he has engaged
in issues associated with teacher competencies, teacher registration,
and the selection of pre-service teachers
In his major discipline area of Physical and Health Education,
Professor Patterson has been at the forefront of curriculum
change in the field, particularly in teacher education. He
has been a member of state and national task forces dealing
with issues related to physical activity and health. He is
past president of the New South Wales branch of the Australian
Council for Health and Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER)
and formally a member of the national executive of that body.
Professor Patterson has been a consultant to universities,
government agencies and private companies both in Australia
and overseas. He is chairman of the board of URAC Ltd and
a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
He continues to teach and supervise graduate students while
maintaining a research and publication interest.
