Dean of Science

Professor William E. Price

William Price is a physical chemist by training.  He completed his BSc (Hons)  at Imperial College, London, UK and stayed there to do his PhD on kinetics of extraction of solubles from foods.  He has had a number of periods working in industry in the UK including Abbott Pharmaceuticals, Unilever Research and British Petroleum Research.   He moved to the Australian National University as a Queen Elizabeth II Research Fellow in 1986 to work in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratories, Research School of Physical Sciences.  In 1989 William Price moved to University of Wollongong and joined the Department of Chemistry as a lecturer.   He became Head of Department in 2000 and remained in this role until he took on his current position as Dean of Science.

Professor Price’s research is broad ranging with long-standing interests in properties and structure in conducting polymers, complex fluids, and foods.  He is also interested in Food processing units such as dehydration, thermal treatment and extraction which rely on an understanding of the physico-chemical phenomena at play.  He has also been working for many years on the  analysis of bioactive components in foods such as phytoestrogens and antioxidants. This research has expanded to include health and environmental aspects of these bioactive compounds.  He has published over 100 articles in international journals on his work. He is currently a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence Australian Centre for Electromaterial Science (ACES).
