Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Professor Lee Astheimer

Professor Astheimer received her BSc Hon. from Lakehead University, Ontario Canada and her PhD in Ecology from University California, Davis, USA (1984). She was awarded a National Institutes of Health –NIMH Postdoctoral Award (1988-1991) in comparative endocrinology and behaviour at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Lee’s research interests are focussed on comparative endocrinology and behaviour related to nutrition, reproduction and stress in vertebrates including humans. She held academic positions at Rutger’s University, New Jersey, USA and the University of Tasmania before coming to the University of Wollongong in 1994. She lectured in physiology and neuroscience at UOW, chaired the research committee in the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Science and served as Head the Department of Biomedical Science. She was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2006 and has served as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) since mid-2007, managing research policy, development, commercialisation and training. She is a current member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts and serves on the board of directors of the Smart Services CRC, Australia and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research & Teaching (ANZCCART), Universities Australia Executive Women, the National Centre of Excellence for Functional Foods, the Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute and the Wollongong Science Centre.
