Three Free Shuttles
Travel from around Wollongong to the University has never been easier. Catch any of these three shuttles for a free ride:
FREE
Route 55c (clockwise) and 55a (anti-clockwise), the Gong Shuttle connects Wollongong City and UOW in a loop including the Station, Innovation Campus, other key locations and Wollongong business and residential areas. The NSW Government introduced this for Wollongong in March 2009 and it has proven to be an enormous success with 10% of all UOW commuters using the service. Buses travel in both directions around the route shown in green on the map above. It runs 7am to 10pm weekdays and 8am to 6pm on weekends. Weekday services operate every ten minutes in the morning 7am to 9am and afternoon 3pm to 6pm, and every 20 minutes in the middle of the day and evenings. Weekend services operate every 20 minutes. It does not run to a strict timetable but is getting increasingly reliable. Gong Shuttle Flier and Route.
All Gong Shuttle buses are DDA compliant, with access for wheelchairs.
FREE
Route 9 (anti-clockwise). This bus connects train travellers and residents of International House and North Wollongong directly with the ring road around the University. Buses run every 7 minutes on average through peak periods, every 20 minutes off peak, and are time-tabled to match with trains wherever possible.
It operates weekdays from 7:30am to 10:30 pm all through session and exam periods, and on a reduced timetable at other times. See NG Shuttle Timetable here or at the bus stops.
The primary bus used for the service is DDA compliant, with access for wheelchairs, running every 20 minutes approximately.
FREE - trial starts 22nd Feb
Trial Gwynneville -Keiraville Service (Anti-clockwise). Servicing the Keiraville, northern West Wollongong, Gwynneville and Smiths Hill areas, this trial service runs every 15 minutes from 7:45am until 9:30am and from 4:30pm to 8:00pm and every 30 minutes in the evening until 10:10pm. The route takes buses anti-clockwise around the University ring road, west along Northfields Avenue and Robsons Road heading south. It follows the route shown in orange on the map above.
The bus will stop for you if you hail it from any of the locations marked on the map, but does not stop at most bus-stops unless the driver is asked or hailed (with a raised arm).
NOTE that the UOW GK Shuttle stops at the UOW ring road stops, but does not go past or stop at the bus terminus on Northfields Avenue.
The GK Shuttle Timetable may also be found on the ring road bus stops. This is only a trial service and may change depending on how well it works.
