Gong Shuttle Bus
The New "Gong Shuttle" - Routes 55a and 55c
This brilliant new service can be caught right outside the University at the bus interchange on Northfields Avenue. Running every 10 minutes in both directions (during peak periods) around a Wollongong City loop.
Route Map and Timing Information
Please note that there are some corrections still being made to the map. A number of the bus stops are not located quite as marked, e.g. there is not a University Avenue stop for the 55c bus after it leaves from the University and the route via Crawford Avenue, Gwynneville is under review.
The Direction of the Shuttles
Gong shuttles leave the University every 5 minutes. They alternate between clockwise (Route 55c) and anticlockwise (Route 55a) loops of the route, e.g. the bus number indicates the direction the bus will take. 55c will travel more directly to the Innovation Campus whilst 55a will travel more directly to the TAFE, Weerona, Hospital and CBD.
Timetable Clarification - Weekday Peak Hours
A clarification on the Gong shuttle bus timetable may be needed for those starting early or leaving late.
The advertising for the Gong shuttle states that it operates every 10 minutes commencing at 7:00am (weekdays), but this does not apply to all stops. For instance, the first buses leaving the CBD will be around 7:15am (anticlockwise) and 7:30am (clockwise).
The first buses start from the University at 7:00am (anticlockwise) and 7:05am (clockwise), and every 5 minutes thereafter in alternating directions. They do not start buses from any other location, so the loop of active buses is not complete until 7:35am. There are 8 buses running in this peak period. It takes just under 40 minutes for a bus to complete the loop.
So, in reality, the first bus coming up Crown Street going to the University will be at around 7:30am. There is not a published timetable, so exact times may vary.
On the positive side, the buses continue to leave the University every 5 minutes until 9:00am, so the morning peak service effectively lasts until around 9:30am.
The afternoon peak ‘3:00pm to 6:00pm’ is similarly affected. Buses through other parts of the day are at 20 minute intervals.
Also of note, the last bus in the evening leaves the University at 9:45pm travelling clockwise, stopping at the Innovation Campus around 9:57pm, and completing the loop.
North Wollongong Station to the University
The UOW shuttle bus (Route 9) continues to service the University ring road and North Wollongong Station/International House on weekdays. The Gong shuttle extends its service to North Wollongong Station during the weekend and other times when the UOW shuttle is not operating.
