Moves to Reduce Traffic Congestion
A study is underway to establish the practicallity of a new Western Entrance to the University to help overcome traffic congestion during peak periods. This would allow access from Robsons Road through the Western Carpark. Its success would rely on more traffic utilising Robsons Road rather than Irvine Street to arrive and depart the University.
If the new entrance is considered viable it should be in place by 2010.
In the meantime, to reduce afternoon traffic congestion on Campus, we suggest drivers take the following approach during peak periods:
- Drivers heading south should exit via the Western Entrance and West to Robsons Road.
- Drivers heading north should exit via the Eastern Entrance.
- Drivers heading east to Wollongong could leave via either entrance, but if from the Western Entrance they should use Robsons Road.
- We wish to discourage those drivers leaving the Western Entrance from turning left down Northfields Avenue as this serves to hold up traffic leaving from the Eastern Entrance.
The Route South
Drivers heading south should leave via the (existing) Western entrance, turn right into Northfields Avenue and left into Robsons Road. Turn left again at the end of Robsons Road to Mt Keira Road then right to the Princes Highway (or left into Wollongong). The Princes Highway south leads to Figtree or via an exit ramp to the Southern Freeway.
This route south from the Western entrance is shorter than the more conventional route via Irvine Street and University Avenue to the freeway. During periods of UOW congestion it should also prove the faster route.
Robsons Road can provide other routes to Wollongong or to the Northern Distributor - there is a slip lane for Northbound traffic off Robsons Road, just before Mt Keira Road.
The RTA and Council have endorsed this strategy and are doing what they can to assist. New signage along the route is planned.

If you can, please try this alternative route as it has the potential to significantly reduce our afternoon road congestion.
Some people have suggested we ask Council to close Northfields Avenue to Eastbound traffic in peak periods. This would, however , be difficult to achieve as there are some vehicles that have legitimate reasons to travel East along that route.
A mobile road sign has been set up for a few days at the Western Entrance as a reminder of this concept as you leave.
