Some International students may need specialised support. Listed in this category is a range of services offered by UOW to improve language, grammar, reading, speaking and study skills - and help with culturally inclusive teaching.

Language learning services - UOW College Multimedia Centre

The Multimedia Centre (MMC) provides a range of language learning services which are especially useful for international students or students from a non-English speaking background.

Room 103 has an innovative interactive audio language lab system designed to improve listening and oral skills (English speaking or pronunciation). These digital and the paper-based resources cater for general as well as academic needs (idioms, everyday conversation, lectures and preparation for the IELTS exam).

Room 102 has resources which focus on assisting students improve grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing skills and has IELTS preparation material. It also has two computers and eight digital audio panels, with access to a database of 1000 audio files.

Rooms 108110 have computers with interactive software to practice their general as well as academic language skills. Students can improve their grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, essay writing and typing skills.

Available to: All currently enrolled students on campus. All rooms are available as self-access centres – room permitting. Academics can refer students to these services.

Grammar support

Individual grammar support is available through the Multimedia Centre (Building 30, Level 2). Appointments required.

Academic English language workshops

Assist in the development of your students English language skills, especially useful for International students or students having difficulty with their class material.

Held at lunchtime in the Learning Resource Centre, the workshops focus on basic Academic English. Some example workshop titles are - oral presentation skills, vocabulary/grammar, avoiding plagiarism, reading for assignments and essay writing.

Conversation Classes

Informal conversation classes are also offered by the UOW College Multimedia Centre.

Advice on culturally inclusive teaching content

Use these services to make your teaching materials and assessment tasks culturally inclusive and easier to follow for your students from a non-English speaking background, therefore making it easier for them to learn.

These services are offered by Learning Development, CEDIR and Wollongong College Australia.

Higher Education Literacy Program (HELP)

Your international students could greatly benefit from the use of this program to develop the language skills used in their particular academic discipline.

The program will soon be launching a website which offers a range of language activities for students who use English as their second language. Currently the site only offers specifically designed activities for Informatics and Commerce. The activities are based on three aspects of language - words, grammar and text.
