Some International students may need specialised support. Listed in this category is a range of services offered by UOW to improve language, grammar, reading, speaking and study skills - and help with culturally inclusive teaching.

English Language Resource Centre & Listening Lab
The Centre provides services such as the 'Listening Lab', a lab with headphones and listening material of varying difficulties. Your students would benefit from this service if they had particular English language problems such as listening, speaking or pronunciation.
The Centre, located in Building 30, is equipped with basic level resources available to help students improve their basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
These services are especially useful for International students or students from a non-English speaking background.
Available to: All currently enrolled students, domestic or International. Academics can refer students for this service. The English Language Resource Centre is a self-access centre.

Grammar support classes
These grammar support classes are useful to refer any of your students (particularly international undergraduates) who have problems expressing themselves verbally or are having general difficulty with academic writing
They consist of a series of five, two-hour remedial student language workshops held by Wollongong University College. These workshops cover very basic topics such as sentence level grammar and vocabulary, how to answer assignment questions and how to use structure to improve writing.
Available to: All students, but targeted at international undergraduates. These classes are held in the English Language Resource Centre once a week and students enrol on a needs basis.

Academic English language workshops
Assist in the development of your students English language skills,
especially useful for International students or students having difficulty with their class material.
Held at lunchtime in the Learning Resource Centre, the workshops focus on basic Academic English. Some example workshop titles are - oral presentation skills, vocabulary/grammar, avoiding plagiarism, reading for assignments and essay writing.
Available to: All currently enrolled students at UOW. A blackboard advertising workshop times is located out the front of the Learning Resource Centre (19.G102) or for an online version see: Academic English Workshops Timetable.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
Use this to refer your students who are not reaching the expected standard of language skills.
Computer labs are available to assist students with their remedial language skills.
The computers are all equipped with e-learning resources for grammar, reading, writing, listening & speaking skills.
Especially useful for International students or students from a non-English speaking background.
Available to: All currently enrolled students at UOW. Computer Assisted Language Learning is a self-access service.

Advice on culturally inclusive teaching content
Use these services to make your teaching materials and assessment tasks culturally inclusive and easier to follow for your students from a non-English speaking background, therefore making it easier for them to learn.
These services are offered by Learning Development, CEDIR and Wollongong University College.

Higher Education Literacy Program (HELP)
Your international students could greatly benefit from the use of this program to develop the language skills used in their particular academic discipline.
The program will soon be launching a website which offers a range of language activities for students who use English as their second language. Currently the site only offers specifically designed activities for Informatics and Commerce. The activities are based on three aspects of language - words, grammar and text.
