What you need to know as an Honours supervisor |
Q9. What is my role in the examination process?
This will depend on the weighting of the honours project and your particular academic unit's policy.
Research Project > or = 24cp
It is University policy that a supervisor cannot examine an Honours project that they have supervised where the research project has a weighting of 24 credit points or more. In addition, supervisors (and students) must not contact any examiner concerning the assessment of the Honours project until the reports of all examiners are returned to and acted on by the assessment committee of the academic unit. All communication between the examiner and the University regarding the Honours project must be directed through the head of the relevant academic unit or, if the Head of the Academic Unit is the student's supervisor, another nominated academic.
Research Project < 24cp
Where a research project is worth less than 24 credit points, the faculty or academic unit must have clear written guidelines which spell out the role of the supervisor in the assessment of the Honours project and the relationship that should exist between supervisor(s) and examiner(s) during the assessment process (e.g. what contact can take place).
In either case, the supervisor is required
to attend meetings of the academic unit assessment committee where students' grades are determined.
