What you need to know as a Teaching Academic

Q5. What requirements do I need to be aware of when assessing a subject?

Assessment practices are set out in a number of policies, codes, rules, guidelines and procedural documents. The overriding requirements are that:

  • students' work be assessed fairly, objectively and consistently
  • assessment methods be appropriate for the intended learning outcomes
  • appropriate and useful feedback be provided on students' performance for each assessment task (with the exception of the final examination)

There are also specific requirements about: in-session tests; group work; number of assessment tasks; and class participation.

Check the following links for:

- an overview of assessment policies, etc, with links to the relevant documents

- section 7 of the Code of Practice - Teaching and Assessment, which sets out a number of assessment requirements

- section 8 of the General Course Rules, which includes the assessment responsibilities of students

- Good Practice - Assessment Guide, which provides guidance on implementing the requirements of the Code of Practice - Teaching & Assessment
