International Week 2006
Tuesday, 8th August 2006Invited Speaker Randa Abdel-FattahUOW Library hosts author Randa Abdel-Fattah’s speech and books’ sale. Randa Abdel-Fattah is the author of the "Does my head look big in this?", a book about the life of an Aussie Muslim girl and the cultural ramifications surrounding her decision to wear a hijab - or head scarf. The story is loosely based on Randa's own experiences. She was 13 when she decided to wear the hijab full-time. But at 17, after hearing how her friends struggled to find employment, she made the agonising decision to stop wearing the hijab outside of school. Randa was born in Australia of Palestinian and Egyptian parents. Randa grew up in Melbourne where she attended a Catholic primary school and graduated from an Islamic College with an International Baccalaureate. Randa is also involved with a number of Palestinian human rights campaigns, the Australian Arabic council and various Australian Muslim women's networks.
