Established in 1951, the University of Wollongong (UOW) has been recognised by Federal and State Governments and by independent analysts as being at the pinnacle of higher education in Australia. Here is a cross section of awards and achievements bestowed on UOW.
2009
LEARNING AND TEACHING PERFORMANCE FUND
The University of Wollongong is one of only four universities in the country to score in the Band A in all four discipline groupings in the Federal Government’s 2009 'Learning and Teaching Performance Fund'.
2008
LEARNING AND TEACHING COUNCIL CITATIONS
UOW was the only university in the country to be awarded the maximum 10 citations from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council in 2008, placing us as number one in Australia. This is the third year in a row that UOW has been in the top five performers nationwide. These citations are awarded to teachers for outstanding contributions to student learning.

ISO 9001:2000 certification for UOW Administration
UOW Administration is certified under AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System (NCSI certification number 14038). The scope of certification for UOW Administration includes Academic Registrar’s Division, Accommodation Services, Buildings & Grounds, Financial Services, Personnel Services, the Performance Indicators Project team and the Quality Assurance Unit.

The University of Wollongong Career Service won the AAGE's Australian Graduate Recruitment Industry Award (AGRIA) for ‘Best Careers Service for Employers’ in 2007.

The University of Wollongong has for the second time been listed in The Times Higher Education Supplement Top 200 World University Rankings.
EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING
UOW is one of only two universities nationwide to achieve top-tier rankings in every discipline category of the Australian Government’s Learning and Teaching Performance Fund for 2008.
UOW is ranked in the Top 500 world universities by the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities 2006.
The 2008 Good Universities Guide reaffirms UOW's long standing position as one of the country’s leading research institutions and a place where students not only experience a five-star educational experience but a five-star chance of gaining a job with a top salary at the end of their degree.
Under the Guide’s ranking system, only the top 20 per cent of universities can be awarded a five-star rating in any one category. UOW received five stars in six key areas, including Generic Skills, which rates our graduates’ satisfaction with the breadth of skills they learn while studying with us.

2006
UOW won the inaugural 2006 Commonwealth University of the Year Award for Community Engagement from The Times Higher Education Supplement and the Commonwealth Association of Universities.
UOW has been ranked as one the top 200 universities in the world by The Times Higher Education Supplement - Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings 2006/2007.
In the 2007 edition of the Good Universities Guide UOW achieved an impressive five-star rating in the important categories of:

(7) Staff qualifications.
Only the top 20 per cent of universities can be awarded a five-star rating in any one category. The independent Guide draws its information from the Federal Government's Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) as well as the results of the national Graduate Destination Surveys.
UOW (particularly in the engineering sector) has done exceptionally well, in the recently announced round of the 2006 Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project scheme. UOW had seven successful grants with funding totalling AUD$2.97 million over the next five years.
Three ARC Linkage International Award applications submitted by UOW researchers have been successful, with a combined value of AUD$66,200 over two years. Linkage International is a highly competitive scheme and these outcomes place UOW third nationally for total funding awarded, and constitutes a success rate of 50 per cent, which is well above the national success rate of 26 per cent.
Nine UOW academics, Professor Stephen Dinham, The Knowledge Building Community Team (Dr Julie Kiggins & Associate Professor Brian Cambourne), Dr Brett Lemass, Professor Roger Lewis, Ms Judith Marychurch, Dr A. Wendy Russell, Associate Professor Gerry Turcotte, Dr Lejla Vrazalic and Ms Moira Williamson, won prestigious Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the national body for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, the Carrick Institute.
Professor Gordon Wallace from the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute awarded a prestigious Federation Fellowship, the first such award for UOW. These Fellowships are only awarded to researchers who are world leaders in their chosen field and represent the pinnacle of achievement in the Australian research sector.
UOW received AUD$12 million funding for a Global Centre of Excellence for Transnational Crime Prevention to be built at UOW's Innovation Campus.
The Illawarra Cancer Carers group presented a donation of $100,000 to UOW for research into an anti-cancer drug project, headed by Professor Philip Clingan, Professor John Bremner, together with colleagues Associate Professor Marie Ranson, Dr Tamantha Stutchbury, Dr Julie Locke and Ms Laurel Morrissey.
Sixteen applications from UOW researchers were successful in the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) AINSE Awards for 2006, with grants totalling $203,365. This represents a 100 per cent success rate for the University. Of the approved grants UOW received the highest total dollar value of any of the 32 universities that submitted applications.
UOW and its largest subsidiary, Illawarra Technology Corporation (ITC), both named as an "Employer of Choice for Women" by the Federal Government's Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA).
UOW's Library received a significant donation of 700 books from the personal and working library of one of Australia 's pre-eminent philosophers, Professor John Passmore.
2005
For the second successive year UOW received a maximum 5-star ranking (top eight Australian universities) for 'Research Intensity' from the Australian Good Universities Guide , an independent review of all universities across the country.
The Australian Good Universities Guide gave UOW maximum 5-star rankings in the categories of 'Getting a Job', 'Graduate Starting Salaries', 'Positive Graduate Outcomes', 'Graduate Rating' and 'Staff Qualifications'.
UOW researchers achieve a 26.9 per cent success rate in hotly-contested Australian Research Council grants, compared to the national average of 24.4 per cent.
Education, Science and Training Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson announced UOW's pivotal role in a $12 million Australian Centre of Excellence in Electromaterials Science. One of the key aims for the team from UOW, Monash University and the Bionic Ear Institute is to create the electromaterials required for a new generation of bionic ears, artificial muscles, nerve repairs, and the bio-batteries and bio-fuel cells to drive them.
DEMONSTRATING EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING & LEARNING
The University of Wollongong has been recognised as one of the top Australian universities for excellence in teaching performance under the '2006 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund'.

Significant energy savings at UOW were recognised by the NSW Government with the Minister for Utilities, Mr Carl Scully, awarding UOW a Gold "Green Globe Award" at the Energy and Water Green Globe Awards 2005.
Illawarra Technology Corporation (ITC), the largest of UOW's subsidiary entities, named among 115 organisations as an "EOWA Employer of Choice for Women".
UOW named national winner of the 2005 Prime Minister's Employer of the Year Award in the higher education category for a proven track record of employing people with disabilities.
2004
UOW joined an elite group of eight Universities, receiving a top 5-star ranking for 'Research Intensity' in The Australian Good Universities Guide , the only regional university to receive this honour.
UOW's success rate in the ARC Linkage Scheme was 55.5 per cent, compared with the national average of 50.7 per cent.
The Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson, announced the establishment of UOW's Graduate Medical School . The School will be based on an exciting new model that aims to meet the critical shortage of doctors in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia .
Graduate Careers Council of Australia figures reveal employment prospects for UOW graduates are more than 10 per cent higher than the national average.
Statistics from the 2003 Graduate Destination Survey by the Graduate Careers Council revealed that UOW engineering graduates had a 100 per cent employment success rate over the year.

2003
UOW announced in the top 10 of Australia universities in relation to funding from Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grants. UOW came in at outright eighth on the table surpassing universities much larger in size. In fact, UOW landed in fifth spot on the "top 10" table based on the size of the University's operating grant.
UOW's Higher Education Workplace Skills Olympiad (HEWSO) announced as a winner in the prestigious awards of the Business Higher Education Round Table for Outstanding Achievement in Collaboration in Education and Training.
Sydney Water named UOW as one of the "Top-Five" water conservation performers for 2002-2003.
The Minister for Energy and Utilities, The Hon Frank Sartor MP, presented a Silver Energy Smart Business Award to UOW for commitment to reducing greenhouse gases at the Energy Smart Green Globe Awards held at Parliament House.
UOW's UniBar received the 'Major Award' category for overall design excellence at the Wollongong City Council Architectural Design Awards as well as the award in the public buildings category.

Figures released by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA) showed that UOW graduates have a full-time employment rate of 93.3 per cent against a national figure of 83 per cent.
For the third successive year, UOW recognised by The Good Universities Guide as Australia's most successful university for the two pivotal student categories of "Educational Experience" (graduate rating, staff-student ratios and staff qualifications) and "Graduate Outcomes" (getting a job, total graduate outcomes and graduate starting salary).
The Australian newspaper listed UOW as Australia 's number one ranked university on a range of indicators for undergraduate education. Drawing on a combination of Federal Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) publicly-available indicators, The Australian report compiled by university administration commentator, Gavin Moodie, listed UOW 25 points clear of its nearest rival, the University of Melbourne.
Premier of NSW, Mr Bob Carr, announced that the NSW Government will invest $24 million to create a new UOW technology precinct at Brandon Park, called the Innovation Campus.
UOW announced Australia 's number one university for linkage international funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) for 2002.
UOW short-listed for the University of the Year Award in the highly competitive area of international status.

2001
UOW researchers topped the national percentage success rate for ARC Discovery Projects. The national success rate was 23.2 per cent, whereas UOW researchers scored 25 per cent.
UOW researchers also topped the national percentage success rate for both Linkage Projects and Australian Postgraduate Awards - Industry (APAI). The national success rate was 50.8 per cent, whereas UOW's was 57.6 per cent.
UOW's Michael Birt Library won the Australian Quality Council's Australian Business Excellence Award at the International Business Excellence Summit in Sydney .

UOW the first western university in the world to be issued a licence from the Federal Government of the United Arab Emriates (UAE) to operate an offshore campus in Dubai.

Relative to size, UOW was the top university in the country in Australian Research Council (ARC) grants and secured funding for two out of eight available Key Centres - a Smart Food Centre in the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences and a centre examining global immigration in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce.
UOW ranked fifth amongst Australian universities for ARC Strategic Partnership in Industry Research (SPIRT) grants.
UOW ranked ninth in Australia for ARC Fellowships.
UOW the only Australian university to receive a major industry grant from Sun Microsystems, receiving a Sun Java Laboratory worth $145,000 in the School of Information Technology and Computer Science.
Illawarra Technology Corporation, a controlled entity of UOW, won the ANZ Bank Export Award at the 1997 Integral Energy Illawarra Business Awards.
The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs selected the Wollongong University College (WUC) as one of the consortium of partners for the delivery of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) in the southern Sydney and Illawarra regions.
1996
UOW's Library won an Australian Quality Award for Achievement in Business Excellence.
Major international consultancy projects negotiated with AusAID, Asian Development Bank and the World Bank and exciting educational training programs successfully designed for Pakistan (Nursing) and the Maldives (Education).
1995
UOW achieved 19 successful Australian Research Council (ARC) grants and ranked second in Australian Postgraduate Awards.
UOW ranked among the top 10 universities in Australia by the Federal Quality Review for research management and outcomes.
Relative to size, UOW received the highest level of Australian Research Council (ARC) grants.
The first Federal Quality Review ranked UOW among the top 9 Australian universities for community service.
1994
The first federal Quality Assurance Review placed UOW in the top nine Australian Universities.
UOW named in the top 11 of Australian universities for industry related grants by the Quality Assurance Review.
1990
UOW received prestigious awards from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) of the United States - the first institution in Australia to do so. The 'Chapter of Excellence Award' and the 'Best Chapter Award' were in recognition of the scientific and technical activities of the TMS Student Chapter at UOW.
1989
UOW's Buildings and Grounds division won the Public Institution category in the Wollongong Garden competition as well as a special award for the landscape associated with the Kooloobong residence.
1982a
UOW becomes the first Australian university to provide year-round teaching.
1980
UOW researchers won seven Australian Government Postgraduate Research Awards. The University was allocated four awards and then took all three in the NSW 'pool', which could have been awarded to any university in the state.
1979
Figures from the Graduate Careers Council of Australia showed that UOW graduates had the highest rate of employment for the seven universities in NSW and the ACT and that UOW graduates had the third best employment rate of Australia 's 19 universities.
1976
A UOW produced film, "University: A New Way of Life" won the 1976 Television Society of Australia's Penguin Award for the Best Regional Station Program.
