Research Strengths 2010 - 2012
The University of Wollongong continues to expand in areas where we have traditionally had world leading research. These areas include information and communications technology, engineering and the sciences. The high quality of UOW research in nanotechnology and materials science was recognised and strengthened by the award of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Electromaterials Science, with partners including Monash University, St Vincents Health and the NSW Department of State and Regional Development.

Research Networks
UOW Research Networks are funded by the University Research Committee to support the development and coordination of research collaborations between groups of researchers (or nodes) across disciplinary and organisational boundaries.
URC Research Networks are designed to encourage and facilitate:
> exchange of information to identify and develop synergies across research groups through workshops, invited visitors, conferences;
> development and implementation of coherent and integrated research plans among researchers working on areas of overlapping interest; and
> efforts to nurture the careers of young investigators and research students by promoting a sense of broader relevance and collaboration.
Our current Research Networks are:
- Energy Futures Network > More Information
- Sonic Arts Research Network (SARN) > More Information
- Social Innovation Network (SInet) > More Information
Strategic Research Initiatives
The URC Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) aim to support the development of the research capability of individuals or small teams with a clear trajectory for growth as evidenced by excellent research outcomes and/or a high level of external funding over the past three years.
- Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry (CAC) > More Information
- Shoalhaven Marine and Freshwater Centre (SMFC) > More Information
- Smart Foods Centre (SFC) > More Information
- The Child Obesity Research Centre (CORE) > More Information
- Centre for Translational Neuroscience (CTN) > More Information

Research Clusters/Centres
Web-accessible information on all UoW research strengths/centres/institutes can be found in the relevant research cluster.
In addition, individual Faculties have smaller and developing research strengths and these can be accessed via individual Faculty pages.
Vice Chancellor's Awards
The Vice Chancellor's Awards recognise the outstanding contributions staff make to the University of Wollongong.
