The main impact associated with energy use is that it contributes to the greenhouse effect and global warming. UOW draws 15 per cent of its power needs from wind turbine generated renewable energy.

In 2008 the University of Wollongong  increased its purchase of renewable energy from 2% to 15%. UOW previously bought only 2% renewable energy as required by the NSW Government, but in November the University officially moved to improve its environmental credentials by choosing to draw 15 per cent of its power needs from renewable wind energy sources.
