Background
Campus Environmental Management Committee (EMC)
In 1996-7, a University Campus Environment Management
Committee (EMC), under the chairmanship of Mr. John
Steinke, undertook an extensive review of issues relating
to management of the campus environment.
This Committee prepared a substantial report that
was accepted by the Planning and Development Committee
and Senate. The EMC Report contained a large number
of recommendations for
action.
Campus Environmental Management Working Party (CEMWP)
Following the publication and particularly after acceptance
of the EMC Report by Senate (in mid-1998), actions were
initiated by the University to address the recommendations
therein.
Many specifically relate to the work carried out by
individual sections of the University, e.g., Buildings
and Grounds, UniCentre, and these units have incorporated
the relevant recommendations in their work. A number
of recommendations did not fall specifically within
the ambit of any university unit, and a mechanism was
required to ensure that action was initiated on them.
There was also an identified need to continue certain
aspects of the work of the EMC. In mid-1998, it was
decided that this would be carried
out by a Working Party on Campus Environmental Management.
