Transport survey drives a big response

Transport is an important issue at the University of Wollongong, with thousands of students and staff travelling by car, bus, train, bike and foot to the main campus each day during session.

To find out more about the transport needs of the UOW population, the Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives (ESI) Unit, with IRIS Research, recently carried out a transport survey, asking anyone who commuted to work on 26 May to fill out a 10-minute online survey about their views on travelling to UOW.

Almost 4000 people filled in the questionnaire – which, according to transport project manager Tom Hunt, was more than double the expected numbers of respondents.

“Information has been collected on where people commute from, how they travel, what options they have for sustainable travel and what can be done to improve transport facilities,” he said

“IRIS Research are currently busy compiling and analysing the results and we are hoping for information to be available in a few weeks, to help us help UOW commuters.”

While the purpose of the survey was to give staff and students the chance to have their say about commuting at the University, everyone who entered was given the chance to win a range of prizes.

The winners of the draw were Stuart Little, Daniel Gleeson, Yoko Robertson, Cathy Campbell. Respectively the were awarded $400 from Wollongong Bike Hub, a $300 gift voucher at the Unishop, dinner at the Outback Steakhouse to the value of $200 and a $200 gift voucher to spend at David Jones.
