Community Engagement Grants Scheme

Disabled Children’s Services in Illawarra – A Needs Assessment (Awarded $6,429)

Project Leader: Dr Gary Noble, Director, Centre for Social Marketing Research, Faculty of Commerce

The project team will be working with the Disability Trust as his community partner. They plan to undertake a census-based survey of the current and future needs of children with disabilities and their carers in the Illawarra. It will be the first census of its kind ever undertaken in the Illawarra. Such information will allow the Disability Trust to better plan its future directions, better target its programs and resources and provide evidence-based information to enable it to apply for government funding more effectively.

Aunty Jean’s Good Health Team – A Living Legacy (Awarded $9,919)

Project Leader: Mr Owen Curtis, Dept of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences

The project aims to meet the special health needs of indigenous people. The team is developing functional fitness activities to support traditional games for indigenous participants. UOW will be working with the Aboriginal Vascular Health Program and South East Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service, NSW Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, and Elders of the Wollongong and Shoalhaven indigenous communities.

Web-cast Water Testing and Weather Station (Awarded $10,000)

Project Leader: Mr Mark O’Donnell, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science

Th eproject involves the placement of a web-cast water quality station and fully automated weather station at Fairy Lagoon near the UOW Science Centre. The equipment will provide vital information as to what environmental changes are taking place in the lagoon which will help lead to less polluted waterways. It will also help in the teaching of climate and weather issues in schools making the subjects more relevant to students. The Science Centre will host both stations and the Faculty of Science will maintain a website carrying information about the project.

On this project, UOW will be working with Wollongong City Council, Sydney Water, Baulderstone Hornibrook (company working on the Innovation Campus) and science teachers within schools.

Growing up on the South Coast (Awarded $3,752)

Project Leaders: Professor Jan Wright and Dr Karen Malone, Centre for Interdisciplinary Youth Research, Faculty of Education

One of the project's basic aims is to train young people to be evaluators of their own communities.The team want to identify and understand issues that have an impact on young people in the region. Forums are planned to disseminate information. Community partners and stakeholders in this project are the Wollongong Youth Services, Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council, Lake Illawarra High School and Young People in the Illawarra.
