Connecting with the Community

The University of Wollongong recognises that it is a major entity in its local and national communities and to a lesser but no less significant degree, to the international community. The University is committed to understanding the needs of its communities and to engaging these communities in the life of the University.

At local, national and international levels, the community benefits from the University's provision of higher educational opportunities. In addition, the community receives, from its relationship with the University, strong support and leadership in regional, state and international development, diverse intellectual and cultural perspectives, improvements in school education, development of the professions, industry and commerce, recognition of and solutions to social, health and welfare issues and access to the University's resources.

The University itself gains by building community partnerships which enhance its reputation and support its development.

There are many examples of interaction between UOW and the community. Key areas of community engagement include:

  • The sharing of knowledge between the University and its communities.
  • Contributing to the sustainable development the Illawarra region and host regions.
  • Strengthening incentives and resources for educational growth and development.
  • Taking an active role in enriching the cultural fabric and social life of the University and its communities.
  • Collaborative research and development programs with local, national and international industry.

The newly formed Office of Community & Partnerships was established to develop, initiate and support programs that connect the University of Wollongong with its various communities.
