Community Engagement Grants Scheme Case Study

Project Title: New Media Legal Education Resources (awarded $5,000 in 2007)

Project Leader: Gabriel Watts, Student in Faculty of Law

Community Partners: The Foundation for Young Australians, The Law and Justice Foundation of NSW, The National Children’s and Youth Law Centre, The Marrickville Legal Centre, The Legal Centre, The Legal Aid Commission of NSW

“Receiving a Community Engagement Grant not only allowed me to get my idea off the ground, but it gave me access to the resources and expertise to make my project a success.” Gabriel Watts, CEGS recipient.

The project aimed to increase levels of access that young people have to legal advocacy and services by decreasing feelings of intimidation that young people can experience when seeking legal advice and to use innovative legal education in order to empower young people to make better informed decisions should they come into contact with the legal system.

This project created a range of multimedia legal advocacy resources for young people that will serve as prototypes for developments into new areas of online legal advocacy. Specifically these resources will be flash animations that address the topic of going to court.

Partners involved in the project were The Foundation for Young Australians, the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW, the National Children’s and Youth Law Centre, the Marrickville Legal Centre, the Legal Aid Commission of NSW.
