So, you need some extra cash! You need to look for work, but this is never as easy as it sounds, is it? Here is some information that will assist you in the search for casual and part-time work. (International students, firstly, make sure you have your working visa. This allows you to work a maximum of 20 hours per week in Australia).

Unicentre: The Unicentre employs students in the food outlets, UniBar and UniShop.

URAC: The University Recreation and Aquatic Centre employs in the gym, pool area and at the front desk. Please contact URAC directly on 4221 4700, or take in a resume outlining relevant experience.

Departments: Sometimes particular departments require students for tutoring and research work. Ask around in your department to see if there is a need for this type of work, and also check The Illawarra Mercury on a Saturday, as this is the day that the University advertises positions.

The Careers Service: The Careers Service at the Uni is there to help you make appropriate career choices, get involved in activities to increase your employability, and to help you find work relating to your degree after you have finished Uni. Canvassing: This means visiting employers in person or contacting them by phone or email. If you have a free afternoon, go into Wollongong and walk around the places you think you could be employed (such as restaurants, clothes shops, retail shops) and let them know you are seeking casual employment. Make sure you take with you a one-page information sheet about yourself, including contact details and past work experience. Also ensure you are looking your best for these one-to-one meetings, as first impressions count!

Notice Boards: You can find notice boards around the Uni and also around shopping centres. If you have a service you could offer (eg. Babysitting, gardening, tutoring), advertise this with your telephone number and wait for any replies.

Mailbox Drops: Do up a little leaflet advertising your services and drop them into mailboxes around your neighbourhood. This is good for domestic jobs such as gardening, cleaning, ironing and tutoring.
