Global Highway Is On Again
Global Highway was held on Thursday 27 August as part of International Week which is held at UOW from Monday 24 August to Friday 28 August.
Organised by the students living in the university residences, Global Highway celebrates the many nationalities that live @ uow and celebrates the cultural diversity of students that are living in university accommodation.
“Global Highway is such a wonderful opportunity for all students living in residence to get together and showcase our cultures to the rest of the UOW Community. We have such a diverse mix of nationalities and cultures living in the residences, and Global Highway is always a fun and informative event”, said Sai Rittaporn, student from International House and Global Highway coordinator.
“Stalls representing different nations will be set up on campus from the UniBar to the McKinnon Building creating a festive and colourful atmosphere with music, dancing and other activities. Participants will have the chance to take part in a variety of activities at each stall such as henna painting, Bollywood Dancing, the Tour de France and air hockey from Canada," explained Sai.
“We had some first timers this year, with stalls from Bhutan and Sri Lanka, which is really exciting. We also had Kenya back for the third year running, with the same students involved, which shows a real commitment and enthusiasm for the event.
“Also for the first time we will had school children attending the event. 160 primary school students from Gwynneville Primary School visited Global Highway,” said Sai. This shows just how much the event has grown and it’s wonderful to see the community involvement extend outside the University.”
All UOW staff and students are invited to attend. Participants collect a Global Highway passport at the living @ UOW stand, participate in the activities at each stall and everyone who finishes the Global Highway collects a prize.
Countries participating this year were Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Bhutan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, France, UK, Norway, Canada and USA.
"Global Highway is important on two levels. Firstly, it allows everyone to have fun in so many different ways from around the world. Secondly, it shows how truly international the University of Wollongong and its residences have become," said Alison Hemsley, Student Residence Manager, International House.
Global Highway was held on Thursday 27 August from around 10am to 3pm.
