Community Engagement at the University of Wollongong involves reaching out to establish and grow important relationships with our communities. The UOW Planning Statement 2008-10 defines Community Engagement as “mutually rewarding partnerships with our varied communities ... to build and sustain successful relationships with business, industry and other community groups.”

Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service

The Celebrating Community event was held on Friday, 9 October to highlight the important relationship between the University of Wollongong and its communities.

UOW Graduates and community members were recognised for their contribution to community service by the Chancellor Ms Jillian Broadbent AO, through the presentation of the Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service.

The award recipients were Mr Alfred (Neil) Preston OAM, Ms Kathleen Davis, Ms Sally Stevenson and Strategic Community Assistance to Refugee Families (SCARF).

ALUMNI CATEGORY

Mr Preston won the Award for Achievement in Community Service in the Alumni Category. His dedication to advocating for the rights of disadvantaged community groups has lead to his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of Greenacres Disability Services.

COMMUNITY CATEGORY

Ms Davis has been highly involved in the Nowra Circle Sentencing Court program since 2002. The program provides an alternate system by which Indigenous Australians have greater control over issues that affect them.

Ms Stevenson is the founding and current chair of Indigo Foundation. Indigo Foundation provides health and education support to marginalised communities in eight countries around the world.

SCARF is an organisation that assists refugees in engaging with their community. Projects include advocacy, homework tutoring, and assistance in obtaining a drivers license.

This was the third annual Celebrating Community Event with an attendance of over one hundred people. Each winner received a $5000 donation to the registered charity or non-profit group of their choice.
