thesis title:

the larrikin subject: hegemony, subjectivity and subalternity in sydney 1870-1900

abstract:

this thesis looks at the construction of the ‘larrikin’ subject in late nineteenth century sydney and how this construction was used to outlaw particular kinds of behaviours and particular groups in society. It uses freud, lacan and gramsci to argue that larrikinism was constructed through and by resistance to the ‘normal’ subjectivity required by industrial capitalism, and that this construction, and the subsequent sanitization of the term ‘larrikin’ has had long term consequences for social inclusion in australian society, resonating with contemporary debates about the issue of australian values and the marginalization of young people in contemporary society.
